Biography

Dr. Ziad Abu Ghararah is the Secretary General of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) since 2005. He was the Vice President of the Meteorology and Environmental Protection Administration (MEPA), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 2000-2004, and the associate editor of the Journal of Applied Water Science (AWS) since 2011. He is an IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change) bureau member that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007. Elected as the vice-chair of working group III of the IPCC for Asia Region, 2002-2006. Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the 9th Global Meeting of the Regional Seas Conventions and Programmes, organized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) in 2007. Chairperson of the Sea - to - Sea Regional Conference, 2005, Cairo, Egypt. He was elected as the Spokesperson for the Arab Region at the Johannesburg Summit on Sustainable Development, 2002. He was the chairperson of the Executive Committee at the first Islamic Conference for Ministers of Environment, 2002. Member of the Foundation Committee of the Saudi Society for Environmental Sciences 2003, and Member of the Foundation Committee of the Saudi Society for Marine Sciences 2004. Chairperson of the Board of Referees for the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment Prize 2002-2006, and Member of the Supreme Committee of the Kingdom Prize for Environmental Management 2003-2005. Honored by the Egyptian government Ministry of Environment for his efforts in the conservation of the marine environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, 2015. Ziad Abu Ghararah received his Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, 1982 from King Abdul Aziz University (KAAU) and a Master's degree in Environmental engineering in 1984 from KAAU and a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic & State University, Blacksburg, USA) in 1988.
