Ph.D. Candidate National Technical University of Athens (NTUA)

Biography

Vasiliki I. Chalastani is currently a PhD Candidate at the Laboratory of Harbour Works, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. Her thesis, co-supervised by one of the most emblematic scientists of our times, Professor C.M. Duarte, is entitled as "Optimization Techniques for Marine Spatial Planning" and aims to develop a tool for the optimization of the use of marine environment through reconciliation of activities and conservation features. In parallel, Vasiliki acts as a consultant of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy of Greece, providing solutions for complex issues regarding coastal engineering and environmental matters. Previously, and following her undergraduate studies as a Civil Engineer at NTUA, Vasiliki pursued her MSc entitled ''Water Air Pollution and Energy at global and regional scales" at École Polytechnique, Paris, France, during which she gained a thorough knowledge of the laws and interactions governing the evolution of our natural environment. When in France, Vasiliki has conducted her internship along with the side of two prestigious scientists, J.P. Gattuso at the Laboratoire Océanographique de Villefranche, in Villefranche-sur-mer and L. Bopp at École Normale Supérieure, Department of Geosciences, Paris. During the internship, she delved into the specifics of the ocean-based solutions for tackling climate change and worked as a member of a scientific team of high impact. The outcome was co-authoring the article "Ocean solutions to address climate change and its effects on marine ecosystems" published in Frontiers in Marine Science. In 2018, Vasiliki worked for the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations with A.K. Magnan on the issue of indicators aiming to track climate change adaptation.
