Abstract: The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Indian Ocean are inextricably linked. SCOR was formed in 1957 by the international ocean community to coordinate the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) which ran until 1962. SCOR's initial focus was how best to gain better understanding of "the greatest unknown in the global ocean" and created the Working Group concept. This set the scene for subsequent SCOR operations, based around Working Groups, Large Scale Programs, regional Capacity Building and international collaboration.
Prof. Burkill's seminar will outline briefly the early days of "discovery" in the Indian Ocean. He will describe how SCOR works today with its emphasis on fostering "bottom-up" oceanography internationally. He will then return to the current IIOE-2 program, which started in 2015, and give some examples of recent understanding gained and how IIOE-2 may evolve in the future as a component of the new UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) initiative. Finally, Prof. Burkill will outline the steps needed for any country that wishes to become a member of SCOR.
