The Saudi Aramco-KAUST center for Marine Environmental Observations (SAKMEO) is seeking a research scientist in the area of coral reef fish ecology. Based at KAUST and supported by Saudi Aramco, much of our work is driven by the need to quantify and forecast responses to environmental change. The ecological component of this project aims to understand the major processes driving the structure and function of marine habitats, in particular how natural and human disturbances influence the biodiversity patterns and biological production.

A Research Scientist is required to support the SAKMEO ecological activities. The position requires a strong research and publication background in coral reef ecology, preferably in the Red Sea. Under the co-supervision of a Professor of Marine Ecology and Senior Research Scientist in Marine Ecological Assessment, the role involves marine biological monitoring, fish identification, coral reef assessment and publication of results.

Qualifications/Competencies:

  1. PhD in Marine Ecology, Reef Ecology, or other related field and at least 5 years’ experience;
  2. Proven publication record in the field of marine ecology with solid knowledge in Red Sea coral reef systems;
  3. Proven experience working on Red Sea coral fish biodiversity and distribution patterns, ecology (predation, competition, prey and habitat availability), and how natural and anthropogenic disturbances impact reef fish and biodiversity;
  4. Documented experience of extensive ecological field surveys;
  5. Competency in applying and interpreting statistical analyses;
  6. Fluent in English, both spoken and written;
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  8. Ability to work collaboratively and foster a cooperative work environment;

Main tasks:

  1. Plan and lead scientific expeditions in the Red Sea;
  2. Conduct fish surveys;
  3. Analyze data and write reports and scientific publications; and
  4. Co-supervise students and post-docs in the research field.

The position is for three years and includes a competitive tax-free salary and other benefits (housing, health and life insurances, etc.).

To apply, interested and qualified applicants may submit a single pdf file with a cover letter, including a statement of research interests, detailed curriculum vitae, and the contacts of three references to Jennifer.Otoadese@kaust.edu.sa. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
